Generic Revatio

September 9, 2013 By Dr. Jeremy Feldman

Good news.  Revatio has gone generic! The generic name is Sildenafil, it comes in 20mg tablets, and it is now available at a pharmacy near you.

What does this mean for you?

Generic medications for PH

  • Your insurance company may require that you switch to Sildenafil.
  • If you are currently taking Revatio it will most likely be substituted for the generic at the pharmacy unless your physician specifies “Name Brand Only” when ordering.
  • The generic Sildenafil costs significantly less than name brand Revatio making it an option for uninsured or underinsured patients to pay cash for the product.
  • At this time Pfizer is continuing to provide financial assistance to qualifying patients taking Revatio through the RSVP program.  You can find out more information about this assistance program by visiting www.pfizerhelpfulanswers.com or calling 1-888-327-RSVP(7787).

Is it safe to switch to the generic?

Because the active ingredient is the same in Revatio and Sildenafil most patients will tolerate the generic version of Revatio similarly to the brand name.  If you notice any new side effects or worsening pulmonary hypertension symptoms contact your physician immediately.  If you have a documented adverse reaction to Sildenafil your physician can request that your insurance company pay for brand name Revatio.
